As proposed by our President and agreed unanimously at the NW Reunion on 4 September, Mr Tommy Cullen has now taken over from Terry Gill the posts of Hon Secretary and Treasurer, No 249 Squadron Association. For the time being, Terry Gill will act as Chairman of the Association. Air Marshal Sir John Sutton KCB remains our President.

After completing his Basic Trade Training, Tommy was based at the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment (A&AEE)  Boscombe Down and there worked on most types then in service, including a spell on the Lightning Operational Reliability Flight. Tommy was then posted to 249 Squadron at Akrotiri as a Radio/Radar Mech, arriving in Nov 1960 and serving until May 1963.

He then spent the next 47 years in a wide variety of posts including spells in UK and the Middle East as an engineer with Airwork at RAF Bassingbourn, the South Arabian Air Force at Khormaksar, and the Northumbrian University Air Squadron. He spent seven years dealing with passive electronic devices with the Allan Bradley company in Jarrow  before entering the oil industry, initially in the Middle East and then at Sollum Voe in engineering supervisory management. In 1991 he entered the nuclear industry with a post on the nuclear fusion project at the Culham Laboratories at Abingdon but later did further spells back in the oil industry in Syria, Saudi Arabia and Qatar before finally becoming a support engineer for nine years in the Sellafield engineering department helping to look after our nuclear legacy. He retired on 31 August, 2010.

Together with his wife Moira, he is a great supporter of 249 Squadron Association and for the past four years has arranged highly successful weekend reunions, initially for members from 249’s Canberra days, each February.

We are fortunate to have found such a good man to be our Hon Secretary and Hon Treasurer and wish him well in these posts.
