Peter, center, with the Oliver Twins
It is with Great Sadness that I have been informed of the Death of Peter Harding, a much admired member of 249 Squadron. Peter served with the Squadron Under Squadron Leaders Barfoot, Ewan and Sutton from 1961 until 1964. Our Sympathy and Condolences go out to his wife Morwenna and family,

Steve Saunders Sent this message,
“Many thanks for keeping me in touch re Peter.
You may not know this but our friendship began in 1951 ( I think that was the year) when we watched Oxford sink in the boat race. We were at school together and, with his brother Paul (who died some years ago) and his mother, we watched b&w TV in his house in Solihull.
On leaving school, we met up again at Bassingbourn and crewed up with Simon Wright (Ex RCAF) and joined 249 as the only single (unmarried) crew so enjoyed several Lone Rangers as bachelors!
On 18 July, 1964 Pete was our best man, Anne being given away by a major from Episcopi where she worked. Reception in the mess at Akrotiri was brilliant!
We have kept in touch with Peter and Mowenna over the years and spent a long weekend with them at Sandringham as guests of HM.”

“I too well remember Peter especially as we flew together on many occasions, in fact it was Peter who gave me an enlarged view of the underside of a Canberra at the air to ground range south of Dubai when he also gave us a sandblasting whilst I was the Range safety officer!
Peter took over from me in developing our crews ability with the rocketry attacks using the “gun camera” we carried and he did it with great effect. The B16 era was the time that the Canberra converted from a high to medium level bomber to a low level interdictor / close air support role and Peter was there at the beginning.”

Curly Hirst says;
“I have just heard the very sad news. Peter was my best friend on 249 Sqn and I watched with admiration his progress from a new sprog pilot to be a first class Canberra pilot and Captain.”
